Beyond the Cloud: Rethinking Information Boundaries
November 1-6, 2013, Centre Sheraton, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The continuing development of computing and mobile technology and the ongoing evolution of the Web environment provide new ways for accessing, acquiring, retrieving and storing information which constantly defy traditional boundaries. With the growth of digital content, information objects are blurred and challenge information organization. As more people interact and exchange knowledge and information on the Web and the cloud, information environments are transformed and human information behaviors are shifting. As information use is increasing and becomes more complex, the need for meaningful integration and analysis is growing. The ASIS&T Annual Meeting is the main venue for disseminating research on advances in information science, information technology and related topics. This year’s conference theme offers an opportunity to reflect on all the changes that impact on human information interaction and their implications for information science and technology. Submissions are solicited for, but not limited to, the five tracks below.

Track 1: Human Information Interaction
Information Retrieval; Information Behavior; Human Computer Interaction; Usability; E-Science & Distributed Collaboration; Virtual Organizations; User Modeling; Mobile Technologies.

Track 2: Information Organization and Representation
Meta data; Taxonomies; Information Visualization; Information Architecture; Digital Libraries; Indexing and Abstracting; Classification; Social Tagging; Semantic Web and Ontology; Social Media.

Track 3: Information Use & Analysis
Information Seeking and User Studies; Strategic, Security & Competitive Intelligence; Information & Knowledge Management; Comparative Analysis of Information Practices; Information Metrics (Bibliometrics/Informatrics/Webometrics).

Track 4: Information Preservation & Access Digital Curation; Big Data; E-book; Information Quality; Copyright, Intellectual Properties and Related Issues; Information Literacy.

Track 5: Information Environments & Socio-Cultural Aspects
Organizational & Contextual Issues; Security & Privacy; Economics of Information; Social Informatics; Information Policy; Foundation of Information Science; Digital Humanities; Web 3.0 and related technologies; Cloud Computing.

Types of Submission:
1) Papers: Papers must report original, unpublished recent results substantiated by experimentation, simulation, theoretical development, analysis or publication. Papers should report on completed or well-developed projects on topics suitable for publication in scholarly and professional journals. The maximum length for a paper is 10 single-spaced pages. All submissions will be refereed with a double-blind review process. Authors must indicate their preferred track at submission time. The chairs reserve the right to re-track any submission as necessary. The accepted papers will be published in the digital conference proceedings.

2) Panels: The proposals for panels on topics that can be either research- or practice- oriented are welcomed. The topics range from emerging cutting-edge research and design, analyses of
emerging trends, opinions on controversial issues, analyses of tools and techniques, to contrasting viewpoints from experts in complementary professional areas. Panels must have a cohesive theme and promote lively discussions between panelists and audience members. Proposals should provide a description (2-4 pages) of the issues to be discussed, and a list of panelists who have agreed to participate with their qualifications and contributions to the panel.

3) Interactive Showcase: One evening will be devoted to face-to-face presentations using traditional posters, short videos or demonstrations. These formats provide opportunities for interactive discussions and feedback. Proposals are welcomed on topics related to the tracks. Proposals should provide a description of the content for each form (2-4 pages maximum or 1,250 words). Authors must indicate their preferred track at submission time. The chairs reserve the right to re-track any submission as necessary.

a) Posters offer an opportunity to present late-breaking results, work in progress, or research that is best communicated in an interactive and graphical format. Please note, however, that posters describing works that are simply proposals without any preliminary results will not be accepted. All submissions will be refereed with a double-blind review process.

Two types of posters are encouraged: contributed research posters presenting new and promising work or preliminary research results; and contributed “best practices” posters presenting the results of design projects, practical implementations of an organization’s practices or industry innovations. The content of the posters should be original and not have been published previously in scholarly or professional journals. The submission should clearly indicate how the application contributes to innovation of thought or design within the field, and how it addresses key challenges and the potential impact on organizations and practices in the field. Joint submissions from researchers and practitioners showing different perspectives on a single issue are encouraged. Posters are expected to generate questions and discussions.

b) Demos offer an opportunity to present novel technology, including new devices, systems or applications. Proposals should describe the technology and list the required supporting equipment. It is assumed that the demonstrator will supply most equipment, and unrealistic requests may be turned down.

c) Videos offer an opportunity to present the traditional poster or demo using a different medium. While videos may present research or demo a technology, they may also be used to describe a procedure or showcase a novel implementation. Videos of 3-10 minutes must be uploaded to You Tube, and the link supplied in the submission.

4) Workshops and Tutorials: Workshops and tutorials will be held after the conference. The purpose is to provide a more informal setting for the exchange of ideas on a focused topic and suggest directions for future work. As such, workshops and tutorials offer a good opportunity for researchers and professionals to present and discuss work with an interested community. Workshops may be mini-focused research presentations, a series of working events, brainstorming and idea sharing sessions, or even a forum for teaching/learning a new skill. In particular, SIGS are invited to submit proposals for half-day or full-day events on topics that are relevant to the goal of the SIG. Proposals that are not SIG-related or sponsored are also welcomed. Only one submission per SIG is allowed for a workshop and additional participation fees will apply.
