Social Network Analysis and Visualization Gathering III (1:30pm-3:00pm, Mon. Oct 5, 2009)

We have decided to continue our Social Network Analysis meetings with faculty and students from the surrounding after our successful gatherings in the Spring. Our next meeting will be on Monday. Oct. 5, in the iSchool Meeting room 2116 (2nd floor of the Hornbake Building South West Wing). This will be an informal gathering where we will share current research and information, as well as discuss possible collaborations. Please contact Derek Hansen at dlhansen@umd.edu or Ben Shneiderman at ben@cs.umd.edu with any questions. This is an open gathering, so please invite your colleagues and students with a shared interest in network analysis and visualization.

CASCI Roundtables & Workshops

Beginning in October 2009 we will reconvene our weekly roundtable and workshops held in the CASCI room (2118D, Hornbake Library, South Wing). Some of these will be formal Roundtables where we will bring in individuals from funding agencies interested in community-related projects, and others will be more informal discussions where we will brainstorm on possible collaborations. We will also use part of the time for skill-building workshops where we will have students or professors with particular expertise present to the rest of the group. For example, we may discuss social network analysis software, how to create a Facebook App, or how to get around Second Life. All are welcome to attend. Ideas for roundtables can be sent to Derek Hansen at dlhansen@umd.edu

Marc Smith Visit and CASCI Kick-Off Event

On Thursday Nov 13th, CASCI was officially launched with a day full of activities. Faculty and students from across campus came together to explore how communities are using novel technologies such as mobile devices to interact in new ways. Over 50 individuals from various programs attended events during the day including individuals from the iSchool, Computer Science, Journalism, Sociology, Public Health, and Business.

Dr. Marc Smith, Chief Social Scientist for Telligent Corporation and founder of the Community Technologies Group at Microsoft Research that he managed for 10 years, provided the keynote address titled: “Pictures of traces of places, people, and groups: visualizing computer-mediated collective action” (see Marc_Smith_Talk). Earlier in the day, Dr. Smith met with CASCI and HCIL members to describe and discuss a new network visualization tool that works off of Microsoft Excel - NodeXL. Faculty and graduate students met with him throughout the day in the CASCI meeting room (2118D Hornbake) to plan future collaborations.

Dr. Smith also presented CASCI Director Derek Hansen with a $2,000 gift to support CASCI activities on behalf of Telligent Corporation, a leading social software provider.
